Living la "Vida" Lindau!

Sorry guys! Another failed attempt to keep a regular schedule, too much party followed by too much work, and of course, the summer in between. I can share some pictures, though:

The big bang still fascinates me...

And the Bavarian dances (and the beer and sausages!).

Catalan people be proud, we have good ambassadors around the globe.

And of course and above all, thanks to all the people I met at Lindau!
Our BierGarten!
Enthusiastic about Science!
Marie Curie Fellows!

After the BierGarten (I could not avoid making faces, sorry :D).
Boat Trip!
Solving Puzzles...
Enjoying the Bavarian Cuisine.
And taking pictures of course.

Thank you Low-Kit, Maike and Nicole for most of the pictures, and for the rest of you...
Send me pictures!

Keep in touch all of you!!!!!!!

Lindau 2010 - 3rd day

Of course, after the short sleep, comes the long face, so imagine that I did not hear the alarm clock (or I did not want to hear it) and I missed a couple of lectures. One thing I believe I haven't mentioned up to now is the weather in Lindau. Sun and hot is not descriptive enough, so let's face that it was extremely hot and humid, enough to be sweating all the time that I had to walk since I lost the bus. Today, my first session is already ruined, I rent a bike and the walking problem is solved... Why it didn't occur to me before?????? Thanks for the advice, Máire.

I missed Ciechanover, 't Hooft and Evans talks. Let's hope the coffee will help and let's go for the second round:

Oliver Smithies: 85 years old, still in the lab, and always a passionate of science and homemade engineering.

David Gross: Future of Physics and Supersymmetry.

Kurt Wüthrich: NMR as a real alternative to X-ray crystallography, and you can even get dynamics data!!

And I went for lunch to realize that there were interesting lectures after it. I missed them all. I took the advantage to walk around Lindau Insel and around lake Constanz. Besides, some nice girl from Barcelona (Rosa) ask for my advice and since this meeting is about networking, I thought that a brief time of mentoring was worth the while.
And then dinner came, and after that, Elegant dress code (look at myself in suit) and a nice concert in a really warm concert hall.

Lindau - 2nd day

3:29 AM, this is a new record, and let's blame the Stockholm-Irish-Spanish Connection. My days are almost 21h long, so nobody can really say that I am not seizing the day (carpe diem).  Well, today let's make the  day backwards....

Walking 30 minutes back home.

Being kicked out from a German bar, where the Swiss,/German/Austrian borders converge, space and time are relative, relative on the amount of Tequila and cheese cake intake.

Football/Fútbol/Fussball/Soccer : Did Spain win? A little bit offside but we are in quarter finals.

Quick BBQ Dinner, Spain is playing against Portugal, the Iberian duel!!!! Hey Temo, how I am doing in my bets!?!?!?!?!

Interview for a to-be-determined press media, about the Marie Curie Fellowship. Publicizing our fellowship and maybe our names shouldn't do no harm isn't it?  There will be pictures!!!!!

Nobel Laureates discussions:

Lunch chat with a Granada lady, PhDed in La Laguna and Postdocted in Cambridge about... Astronomy/Cosmology. Really interesting and motivating.

Panel Discussion about new physics and chemistry approaches for medicine: Nothing new under the sky...

Nobel Laureate sessions in reverse order:

Martin Chalfie. GFP in C. elegans.

H. Robert Horvitz in Programmed Cell Death... (maybe Apoptosis, but pretty interesting).

Theodor W. Hänsch. Light, Spectroscopies, and the omb frequency technique!
Roger Tsien. GFP for cancer treatment.

I waked up pretty early, no sleep and I did not have breakfast, this is not a live for a scientist!!!!!!

Anyway, I will post it early morning today, I am almost sleeping over the keyboard. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

But before, some scientific advice from the Laureates:

Lindau 2010 - 1st day

After the opening comes the serious staff! A "breakfast" which was not a real one, but was interesting enough to meet some new people, what we had in common? A Marie Curie Fellowship. Let's run and get some snacks, and starting the first one:

Presentations:

Ada E. Yonath. 2009 Nobel for Chemistry. The Ribosome solved by X-ray crystallography.
Follow the link for an impressive movie of the RIBOSOME.

Jack W. Szostak. 2009 Nobel for Medicine. Artificial Cell as a model for the origin of life.

John C. Matter. 2009 Nobel for Physics. History of the Universe. Amazing! Really!

Harald zu Hausen. 2008 Nobel for Medicine. Human cancers linked to infections.

Luc Montagnier. 2008 Nobel for Medicine. DNA between Physics and Biology.

Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. 2008 Nobel for Medicine. HIV.

Discussions:

Ada E. Yonath. Self confident, friendly and estimulating scientist. Polar Bears Rule!!!!

Robert W. Wilson (1978 Physics). Plenty of interesting tales about the beginning of cosmology as a scientific branch, ending up in the Big Bang Theory!

Day full of excitement, networking and a personal prize for me, see below:

Question, who is he and which was his prize??????

And all together we had dinner, we chatted, laughed with some jokes and we danced until they kicked us out. I have to admit that I am still pretty jet lagged, so from 12 to 1 am, taking pictures in the harbour:

And then back to the hotel to keep you all updated!!!!!!! Tomorrow more!

Lindau 2010 opening

And it is finally here! Just waiting for the opening was too much, I first went to the registration office and load the 7.5 kg Nobel portrait book back to the hotel, since it was going to be too much for the whole day (I need a higher intake of protein, otherwise I will die to bring it back to Zurich and then Barcelona).

People are willing to interact, meet other scientists from around the world, and for me it is already a huge difference with any meeting I have attended previously. I had the chance to salute my previous supervisor back in my Stockholm time and find out how much I miss Stockholm and such a nice city it is.

For the presentation of the act, Nobel Laureates, Countess Bernadotte, the Princess of Thailand, plenty of peoplee, and among them, or most of them, young scientists and/or researchers. Multidisciplinary means that, biologists, engineers, chemists, physicists, medical doctors, undergrad students passionate for sciences... Nobody is excluded.

And after that, Germany-England, dinner, and Argentina-Mexico. What else can someone ask? Beer of course, aren't we in Germany?

Some Highlights:

Concert: Beate Fürbacher (Harp, left), Martin Hiler (Verrophon, left).

Nobel Laureates and previous Lindau attendees.

And for me the most important part came out in a sentence from the speech of Countess Bernadotte, somewhat a quote of what she said:

"Scientists who still have sparkling eyes each time they speak about their field of research".

And another sentence from Christof Bosch:
"For a week the most intelligent town of the world"... That was flattering, but not lesser than we were selected from over 40,000 applicants.

PS: Irene, do not worry, we were given business cards!!!!!!! No problem for networking!!!!!

Zurich nach Lindau und Herr Jet Lag

It took me a while, after changing time zones in my computer and in my body, I can barely stay awake. Next step, unpack the suit, quick cold shower, take the camera, wear a cap (it is really sunny) and get the registration, program and so on and so forth. Today's challenge, do not fall asleep before 11 pm. It is going to be tough.

The hotel, quite cozy, it is a tiny room in an old bavarian house, the Köchlin Gasthof. My rusty German has to come handy, otherwise I think I am going to have a hard time making myself understood.

Later, some pictures, zzzzzzzz...

Killing time..

Charging the laptop in the airport is always tricky. In addition, there is several people trying to do the same, so as long as you get one plug, you don't leave it as it was the most precious treasure one can get. You have to pretend that you are doing something interesting too, to avoid that killing staring look that you can notice even though your eyes are focused on the screen and the keyboard. Unfortunately, when they realize you are just taking pictures with the webcam, they start to be pissed off. Just before I get killed while taking my flight to Zurich (I arived three hours earlier to the airport due to a little domestic acccident), I am going to show you the Boston Logan airport. Nächste Post, Zürich oder Lindau!
